To explore transparency I took this image.
I checked the transparency box and clicked the background, but all the white in the image became transparent. Transparency does not floodfill it only replaces color.
If you use change color instead, it will floodfill. So now I took the original image again and changed the background color to something that was not in the image. You also cannot paint a transparent area, You would have to take a color block and place it behind the image.
Now I made that pink color transparent. But when I saved it as a transparent gif and was asked which color to make transparent, I clicked on the whited out back. You can see that it still took the white out on the hat. The background of the clipboard itself is white.
You can change the background color on your clipboard by right clicking anywhere on it and change color. Here I changed the board to pink. Then I made the pink on the image transparent and saved it. When asked what color I clicked on the pink clipboard back and it only took the pink out.
| This time I took the graphic with the pink background and saved it as a transparent gif, without actually making it transparent. When asked which color to make transparent, I clicked on the pink. Now it is as I wanted. | |
Here I covered the eyes and nose with a color block. First right click on the face and copy color. Then paste that color into a block. Resize the block and place in position. Merge the 2 images and save as a file.
Now I made that color transparent.
Just for fun I put it over another face image, merge and save.
I've learned that the best way to use the transparency is to make only one color in the image the transparent color. I usually use the top light blue on the color chart. Make all the transparent parts that color before making it transparent. If you are compositing 2 images together make the transparent color the same on both images. You can make the color transparent for the composite. Then replace the color in the transparent places on the image. Save as a transparent gif and pick that color to be transparent.
